Question 1

Which EV charging cable do I need?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your car's charging inlet. Most electric vehicles sold in the UK from 2018 onwards use a Type 2 inlet, the European standard. Older models like the first-generation Nissan Leaf (pre-2018) and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV use a Type 1 inlet. Use the make and model finder above for an instant answer for your car.

Question 2

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 cables?

Accepted Answer

Type 2 (Mennekes) is the current European standard and fits the vast majority of EVs on UK roads today. Type 1 (J1772) is an older connector mainly found on early Japanese and American EVs. The two are not interchangeable, so check which inlet your car has before buying.

Question 3

Should I buy a 7.4kW or 22kW cable?

Accepted Answer

For most home charging set-ups a 7.4kW cable is all you need - it works on a standard single-phase supply and is compatible with every EV on UK roads. A 22kW cable is only faster if your specific car supports three-phase AC charging (such as the Renault Zoe or Tesla Model 3 Long Range) and you have a three-phase supply at home. Buying a 22kW cable for a single-phase car will not make it charge any faster.

Question 4

How long a cable do I need?

Accepted Answer

5 metres suits most driveways where the wall box is close to the car. A 7.5m or 10m cable gives more flexibility if your charge port is on the far side of the car or your charger is set back from your parking spot. Longer lengths from 15m to 50m are ideal for garages, farm buildings, and caravans.

Question 5

What is a V2L cable?

Accepted Answer

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) cables let you export power from your EV battery to run appliances directly - power tools, camping equipment, or even other EVs in an emergency. Not all cars support V2L; compatible models include the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6, Kia EV6, and BYD Atto 3. Check your car's specification sheet to confirm V2L support before buying.
