Installation guide
Can I install an EV charger myself?
Technically possible in some cases - but there are good reasons most people use a qualified installer.
The short answer
You can install a standard 3-pin socket yourself - this is legal and requires no qualifications. However, a dedicated 7kW wallbox must be installed by a qualified electrician and notified to building control under Part P of the Building Regulations. DIY installation of a wallbox voids most manufacturer warranties and disqualifies you from the OZEV grant, which can be worth up to £500.
Why you need a qualified installer
Installing a wallbox is not a simple DIY job. There are several legal and practical reasons to use a registered professional:
- 7kW chargers require Part P notification in England and Wales
- Installer must be NICEIC or NAPIT registered
- OZEV grant requires an OZEV-authorised installer
- Manufacturer warranty is tied to professional installation
- Insurance implications if a DIY installation causes a fire
What about a 3-pin granny charger?
Charging from a standard 3-pin socket - sometimes called a Mode 2 or granny charger - is perfectly legal and requires no installer. The cable plugs directly into a standard 13A socket. The limitation is speed: a 3-pin socket delivers only around 2.3kW, which translates to roughly 8 miles of range per hour of charging. That is fine as an emergency backup, but it is not a practical primary charging solution for most drivers.
The OZEV grant
Eligible renters and flat owners can get up to £500 off the cost of a home charger through the OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) grant scheme. The grant requires that the charger is fitted by an OZEV-authorised installer. DIY installation disqualifies you from the grant entirely - even if everything is wired correctly. Find out more on our EV charging grants page.
How much does professional installation cost?
A professionally supplied and fitted wallbox typically costs £800-£1,200. For eligible households, the OZEV grant reduces that to £300-£700 out of pocket. The exact price depends on your property type, the distance from your consumer unit, and whether any groundwork is needed. See a full breakdown on our cost and options page.
