EV charger costs
How much does EV charger installation cost?
A standard home charger installation typically costs £800-£1,200 supply and fit. The exact price depends on your property, the charger you choose, and how far the cable needs to run - but free quotes from local installers will give you a firm number fast.
Typical home charger installation cost
Most homeowners pay £800-£1,200 for a 7kW smart charger supplied and fitted by a qualified installer. That covers the charger unit, all cabling, the connection to your consumer unit, and commissioning. If your fuse board needs upgrading or the cable run is unusually long, the total can rise - but a local installer quote will tell you exactly where you stand before you commit to anything.
The three factors that move the price most are cable run length, fuse box condition, and your choice of charger brand. A short run from an up-to-date consumer unit to a standard driveway is the cheapest scenario; a long external run to a detached garage or a dated fuse board that needs replacement will add cost.
What affects the cost?
Quotes can vary by hundreds of pounds between properties. The main variables are:
- Distance from fuse box to parking - longer runs mean more cable and labour
- Fuse box upgrade needed - older boards sometimes require replacement before an EV circuit can be added
- Charger brand and spec - basic tethered chargers cost less than app-connected smart units
- Groundworks for trenching - burying a cable across a driveway or garden adds time and material
- Single or three-phase supply - three-phase properties can support higher-output chargers but wiring work differs
After the OZEV grant
If you rent your home or own a leasehold flat, the OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant covers 75% of your installation cost up to £500. That brings a typical installation down to £300-£700 out of pocket - and your installer handles the application, deducting the grant at invoice.
Freehold homeowners do not qualify for the home grant, but can still access competitive prices through our network of local installers.

EV charging grants in the UKWorkplace charging costs
Business installations typically cost £800-£2,000 per point, depending on charger specification and how much groundwork is needed to route power across a car park. Multi-point installations on a single cable run can reduce the per-socket cost significantly.
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) grant covers up to 75% of the cost per socket, capped at £350 per socket, across a maximum of 40 sockets. For a business fitting 10 chargepoints, that is up to £3,500 back from the government before installation costs are even counted.

The only reliable way to know your exact cost is a site survey from a local installer who can see the cable route, check your consumer unit, and confirm your grant eligibility. Through Power EV you can get free, no-obligation quotes from OZEV-authorised installers in your area - with no pressure to proceed.
